The fundamental aim of the Barry McGuigan Boxing Academy is to integrate sport and education in a way that engages young people and puts them on a path of personal development, training and employment opportunity. The BMBA promotes the sport of boxing through mainstream education at every level and to ensure that access to education and sport is fair and equitable to everyone. Working in collaboration with our partner colleges we will promote and provide education, training, information, advice and guidance to support the student’s personal development and to support community initiatives that reflects the social responsibility of the BMBA.

Students can join the BMBA programme from entry level up to level 4, integrated with a wide variety of courses over a period ranging from just a few weeks up to 4 years. This will enable students to gain qualifications such as a BTEC or City & Guilds. Our individual college partners give advice and guidance. For young people who feel they did not reach their full potential at school, this pathway allows them to gain qualifications in their chosen academic field as well as in boxing fitness.

“Education is vital to self development and employability. If a sport such as boxing is the motivatation some young people need in order to re-engage with education then we, as a society, must provide that opportunity and make it happen for them.” Barry McGuigan

The BMBA is now in it’s second year, working in partnership with colleges across the country and with the support of the Amateur Boxing Association.

The economic climate in which providers of further education and adult learning work has changed dramatically. The impact of the economic downturn has been particularly hard on young people: currently, more than 700,000 18–24-year-olds are unemployed and growing. As the economy seeks to recover, the importance of developing the skills through education is all the greater.

The integration of education with sport, through the BMBA and its partner colleges, is a successful means of re-engaging young people and setting them back on a pathway into further education and training. The programme aims to up-skill them in the core areas of employability and to ensure they have the necessary skills essential to personal development and sustainability.

Our Academies and its founder Barry McGuigan firmly believe that education is good in itself; it helps the individual develop character and an intellectual awareness of the world we live in, not simply a means to an end. Education provides an inner strength and confidence that allows people to have a part in deciding their own destiny.

Our specialized BMBA programme combines 9+ hours in the gym with the chosen academic course. Working with high level, ABA qualified coaches you will follow our personalised Scheme of Work. Students can also work towards gaining their assistant and full coaching badges or their judges and referees qualifications in boxing.

Our 4 BMBA colleges are located across the country, with plans in development for 2 new openings in time for the forthcoming academic year.
