Daily Mirror: Why Frankie Gavin Can Be A Golden Great

It’s a late change of opponent for Frankie Gavin at the York Hall tonight, but he won’t mind that – he’ll be happy just to be fighting.

There were only three bouts for Gavin last year. That is not ideal for a young pro making his way.

Like his stablemate discussed in last week’s column, James DeGale, Gavin was a stellar amateur who has taken to the pro game superbly.

He is the only British boxer to have won an Amateur World Championship gold, in 2007, and might have added Olympic gold had he not failed to make the weight for the Beijing Games.

That was a crushing blow for the lad, who couldn’t boil down to the lightweight limit any more.
